Bill Barr turned to his interviewer and said, “Did he succeed?” In context, that innocuous-sounding statement is, in fact, a frightening confirmation of the depths the Republican party is going to defend a man whose foundation and university were judged fraudulent, who was found liable for sexual assault and who faces multiple serious indictments.
Barr was excusing Trump’s January 6th, 2021 behavior by implying it was okay because he did not succeed in overthrowing our government. That is like saying that the bank robber who is caught before he can get out of the bank has not done anything wrong because, after all, “Did he succeed?”
